washington is running out of time and options with the fiscal cliff looming at the end of the year. and the charitable deduction is not the only one on the negotiating table. congress could also make changes to the home mortgage ierest deduction, there could be changes to the property tax write-offs, also another popular one is the capital gains exemptions on home sales. so there's a lot riding on the line here. it could of course impact all of these future tax seasons come next april, joe. >> you start messing with the mortgage deduction, you're going to have steam going out of a lot of taxpayers ears. >> we're talking a lot of big ones on the table. property tax, that's another huge one. everybody says, yes, the deficit, it's all a big problem. and it's true. you can't continue to run these trillion-dollar deficits. but when you get down to the nitty-gritty about what you're actually going to cut, that's what's really hard, joe. >> if they don't fix it, it's going to be in everybody's backyard. thanks so much. >> that's right. >>> does the israel/gaza cease-fire prove that the u.s. can negotiate with what it's called a terror group? what about al qaeda?

ground to avert the fiscal cliff. the optimism we heard from leaders two weeks ago is giving way to the cold reality of all the negotiations ahead. kristin is at the white house. the president is back from his trip. what are senior staffers saying about all the upcoming talks? >> reporter: hope you had a great holiday, alex. they believe that president obama essentially has the leverage in the situation. not only did he win the election having run on a platform of increasing taxes on wealthier americans, if you look at the polls a majority of americans actually agree with him on that issue. as you know, president obama invited congressional leaders to the white house last week. they struck a rare tone of bipartisanship after that meeting. then as you point out, seems like both sides sort of went back to their respective corners and democrats really digging in their heels on entitlements, republicans digging in their heels on the issue of taxes. we're told that aids on the hill are trying to work through a couple of compromise scenarios, especially on the issue of taxes, that would essentially allow taxes to go up on wealthier am

the fiscal cliff talks because, quote, we can't afford it. joining the company from washington is tea party founder justin phillips. come on. house republicans are over a barrel. they lost. what leverage do they have in these negotiations? >> you don't have much leverage when your full scrimmage john boehner's freshly laundered white flag of surrender. john boehner has ceded the field to the democrats. he is not even discussing the issue of spending. it is will lead the issue of revenue. there is going to be more new taxes, absolutely right because when we go to the negotiations, john boehner as usual is starting from a position of weakness. if you're going to start from a position of weakness where you have already given up on the spending side of the equation there's only one alternative, taxes get raised. dave: you mentioned spending. i remember 2009 was the stimulus, $800 billion, you can argue forever about whether it worked out all or not but it wasn't a 1-shot deal. we went up $800 billion and then it stayed. it didn't go away. it was supposed to be a 1-shot deal. that is where the deficit is. it is in at $800 billion stimulus. you are looking for where the deficit comes from some saves medicare and social security. it
